Apply for our training and mentoring programme with your audio-visual project in development! B3 will provide accomodation for participants for the duration of the HessenLab programme.
HessenLab is aimed at international creatives, with the whole programme being held in English.

From October 14th to 17th 2023 B3 Festival of the Moving Image invites 25 emerging talents from the field of moving images to take part in an intense four-day training programme.
You will get the chance to work with renowned international professionals from myriad areas of the media and creative industries.
During workshops and masterclasses, participants will meet other creatives and work in-depth on their submitted projects.
The three best HessenLab projects will be given awards. The prize fund is as follows:
- First prize:€ 1.000
- Second prize:€ 500
- Third prize: € 500
Awards will be presented on Tuesday October 17th, 2023. The programme will be accompanied by screenings, showcases and networking events and participants will receive an accreditation for the entire B3 2023 Festival, which will run from October 14 - 22.
They will also be invited to visit the Frankfurter Buchmesse on the 18th. B3 will provide accomodation for participants for the duration of the HessenLab programme. B3 HessenLab is aimed at international creatives, with the whole programme being held in English.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
The programme will be accompanied by screenings, showcases and networking events and participants will receive an accreditation for the entire B3 2023 Festival, which will run from October 14 - 22.
- Applicants must have published an audio-visual work before (in the field of either film, art, VR / AR or games)
- You have to apply with an audio-visual project that is still in development (preferably at an early stage)
- Thesis projects from universities are not eligible for entry
- Applicants must not be enrolled at a university
- Submissions may be made in the form of project outlines, scripts, screenplays and the like
- It is possible to apply as a group
- All HessenLab participants must pay a fee of 100€ (the fee is only to be paid once your project gets selected)
- B3 will provide accomodation for the duration of the programme (14th - 17th), but will not cover any travel expenses

MENTORS
Johannes Grenzfurthner
Johannes Grenzfurthner is an award-winning artist, filmmaker, author, and performer. With his art he manipulates people to positively respond to his lies and made-up realities. He is the founder and artistic director of monochrom, an internationally acting art-technology-philosophy group.
His horror film MASKING THRESHOLD won awards from the Nightmares Film Festival 2021 in the U.S. and the A Night of Horror International Film Festival 2021 in Australia, among others. Boing Boing magazine referred to him as a leitnerd, a wordplay with the German term Leitkultur that ironically hints at his role in nerd-, hacker- and art culture.
Sebastian Stobbe
Born 1971 in Berlin, Sebastian Stobbe started his career in the film world as a camera-assistant. After completing his studies at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg he became a cinematographer.
In 2006 his focus of interest shifted to the script development process. Since then, he is a freelance script-consultant, concentrating on both fictional and documentary films and serial formats. A second field of work is dramaturgical consultations in the editing process.
In 2014 Sebastian Stobbe also began to work as a writer for documentary films. Since 2009 he has been teaching at different German film schools.
Frauke Schmickl
Dr. Frauke Schmickl studied German and Media Studies in Austria with a focus on film dramaturgy and received her doctorate on the subject of Suspense Dramaturgy in Film and Literature.
She currently lives in Berlin, creates Disney comics and audio drama series and works as a freelance script consultant, script editor and lecturer for various institutions and production companies.
Simone Wernet
Simone Wernet studied film music and literature at the Universities of Bochum and Mainz and completed her doctorate on the subject of "Melodramatic Screen Heroines". She completed further training in script development and dramaturgy at the Skript Akademie, Berlin.
Since then, she has been working as a freelance editor and dramaturge with a focus on the development of material for fictional and documentary films, newcomer and promotional projects, as well as literary material. She is a lecturer at the Buch Akademie, Berlin and a mentor for Hessen Film's STEP author scholarship. She also serves as a jury member for the German Screenplay Award (VeDRA), the Award for Best Screenplay for a Television Film (DAfF) and the Turkish Film Festival Frankfurt.
Malina Nnendi Nwabuonwor
Malina studied screenwriting at the Vienna Film Academy, as well as at the "Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica" in Mexico City.
She is currently writing series for Netflix, Amazon and Co. and feature films for the German and international market. Upcoming: "Sam - a Saxon" (Hulu/Disney+), "Para - We are King 2" (HBO Max).
Additional to her screenwriting work Malina is Jury member at the Vienna Film Fund and Head of Studies at the EPI Media Workshop series "Beyond Stereotypes".
VOICES OF HESSENLAB PARTICIPANTS
The mentoring helped me navigate the project on to the direction that I want to go to, whilst exploring so much creative ideas that I could have never thought of that would fit the project so well.
The lectures are an ideal way to update your knowledge and glance into what is happening nowadays in the industry.
My favourite part of the programme were the opportunities to have live interaction with speaker mentors covering a diverse range of topics, such as: technical innovations within our industry, maximizing social media strategy, legal advice for the film and arts industry, etc.
The experience with the tutor, the talks and sharing and networking with people from other countries and different projects broadens the horizons of knowledge and opens relationships between artists.
