Normative Orders

Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders“

The contributions of the cluster of excellence “The formation of normative orders” at the Goethe University Frankfurt to the B3 guiding theme ON DESIRE promise suspense and gain of knowledge. A bridge is forged from the potential of Thomas More’s 500-year-old work Utopia for analysing contemporary society, to a study on an early Soviet sound film in which the utopia of reconciliation of man and machine becomes a reality. The Internet is re- garded as the desire machine of the present. But how do Facebook and its ilk structure the laws of desire? And what happens in principle to the law, which is actually supposed to cool down the emotions, if one wants to enforce it one- self with a fiery heart? After all there is also a deep-rooted yearning for wisdom. But is it still part of the current aca- demic syllabus?
