Within the Cluster of Excellence "The Formation of Normative Orders" and the course program of B3 the following lectures will be held:

Prof. Dr. Klaus Günther

Lecture on October 16, 2019 at 5 pm

Oh! On Real Fictions and Fictional Realities

Klaus Günther is Professor of Legal Theory, Criminal Law and Law of Criminal Procedure at Goethe University Frankfurt. He is Joint Coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence ‘The Formation of Normative Orders’ and is a member of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research (IfS). His most important publications include “The Sense of Appropriateness” (1993) and “Schuld und kommunikative Freiheit” (2005).

The virtual realities of the online world are frequently cited as illustrations of how the difference between reality and fiction is becoming blurred today. But in the offline world as well we often find ourselves confronted with fictions which in a peculiar way are part of our reality, and in which what we take to be real is pervaded by fictions. Art above all is a domain in which this distinction is played with in disconcerting ways.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst

Lecture on October 17, 2019 at 3.30 pm

In the Cave. On Reality and Power

Rainer Forst is Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt and is Joint Coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence ‘The Formation of Normative Orders’. In 2012 he was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation. His recent publications include “Justification and Critique” (2014), “The Power of Tolerance” (with Wendy Brown, 2014), and “Normativity and Power” (2017).

Anyone who wants to understand the essence of social power has to descend into the cave of ideological delusion. But what exactly does one find there? And how dazzled are those who arrive there out of the light of true reality?

We are living at a time of profound changes in normative orders—the relevant catchwords being migration, climate change, populism and digitalization. How can such orders respond to these challenges? And what are the implications for issues of social cohesion, the future of democracy and international cooperation? The research network Normative Orders of Goethe University Frankfurt situates the phenomena it studies within a wider context of historical and transregional lines of development and normative considerations.

For the current B3, the two coordinators of this interdisciplinary network, which cultivates a close relationship to the arts and their intrinsic cognitive power, will explore the field of tension between reality, fiction and false consciousness. “Oh! On Real Fictions and Fictional Realities” is the title of the lecture to be delivered by Prof. Klaus Günther on 16 October, in which the jurist and legal philosopher will discuss art as a domain in which the distinction between reality and fiction is played with in disconcerting ways. On the following day, 17 October, the political philosopher Rainer Forst will address the topic “In the Cave: On Reality and Power” and thus also the struggle against ideological delusion.
