Bauhaus Women - Film screening and talk with filmmaker Nico Weber and historian Anja Baumhoff

On the occasion of 100 years of Bauhaus, the exhibition Bauhaus und die Fotografie. Zum Neuen Sehen in der Gegenwartskunst (Bauhaus and Photography. A New Vision in Contemporary Art) focuses on the influences of Bauhaus art on contemporary photography. As part of the exhibition program and the B3 Biennial of the Moving Image 2019, the Kunsthalle Darmstadt will be screening the film essay Bauhausfrauen. Die vergessenen Pionierinnen einer Kunstbewegung (Bauhaus Women. The forgotten pioneers of an art movement) (2019, running time 37 min.) The screening will take place on 17 October at 7.30 pm. Afterwards, filmmaker Nico Weber and Dr. Anja Baumhoff, Professor of Art and Design History at the Hochschule Hannover, will discuss in depth the question of gender relations at the Bauhaus.

In her film about the largely unknown Bauhaus women, Nico Weber pays tribute to their work at the State Bauhaus, which existed from 1919 to 1933 and benefited greatly from the work of female students as well as the wives of the Bauhaus masters - above all Ise Gropius and Lucia Moholy. Inspired by the successes in their struggle for equal rights, in particular the introduction of women's suffrage in the year of the founding of the Bauhaus, surprisingly many women began their studies at the new university in Weimar. But even at the otherwise progressive Bauhaus the image of women shaped in the 19th century was to persevere. Despite their outstanding designs, artists such as Anni Albers and Alma Siedhoff-Buscher remained in the second row, and only a few women, the first of them Gunta Stölzl in 1925, made the leap into the men's association of the Master Council as directors of the textile workshop. Nico Weber's film essay about Bauhaus women shows how they went from an euphoric vision of shaping modern living spaces to the sobering realization that, despite all efforts, they were still largely restricted to typical "female" areas such as the weaving class.

After the screening, filmmaker Nico Weber meets Dr. Anja Baumhoff in conversation, who also has her say in the film. Anja Baumhoff studied in Freiburg and Oxford and received her doctorate in social history from Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, USA. Since 2014 she has held the professorship for art and design history at the Hochschule Hannover. Her fundamental research work The Gendered World of the Bauhaus. The Politics of Power at the Weimar Republic's Premier Art Institute, 1919-1932 was published in New York in 2001. The work was the first to systematically examine the role of men and women as well as gender stereotypes at the State Bauhaus. Soon Baumhoff‘s book Der Neue Mann und das Bauhaus will be published, which examines concepts of masculinity in classical modernism using the example of the Bauhaus.

Nico Weber studied philosophy, political science and literature. For more than 20 years, her films for the public broadcasters ARD, ZDF, arte, 3sat, ORF and SRF have regularly transcended boundaries – thematically, dramaturgically and visually. Recently, the artist has positioned herself at the intersection of film and fine arts. Her company NOW COLLECTIVE works with renowned directors of photography and editors, shooting throughout Europe, Asia and the USA. Her documentary Bauhausfrauen is the long version of the 3sat Kulturzeit magazine series of the same name, which was first broadcast in November 2018 and nominated for the Grimme Prize 2019.
